Magill's Choice: The United States at War Review

“A chronological examination of U.S. involvement in wars from Revolutionary times through the post-Cold War conflicts (including Iraq)… Information is easy to find, easy to read, and organized to help students make connections. Useful for reports as well as general interest.”
-School Library Journal, 2006

“The United States is, once again, at war. This volume provides a chronological listing of our wars: The Revolutionary War, The War of 1812, The Mexican War, The Civil War, The Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, The Korean War, The Vietnam War, Conflicts in the Caribbean and Post-Cold War Conflicts. The last, a report of Iraq, includes the Battle of Fallujah and mention of the proposed elections. Individual sections have an overview of the conflict and the essays that follow cover individual battles, campaigns and related issues, such as the role of women, discussions of weaponry and peace treaties. For battles, the name, date, location, combatants, principal commanders and the result are given. At the end of each section, suggestions for further reading are provided. A few black-and-white illustrations and maps also are included. Appendices offer a 10-page bibliography, an eight-page timeline, a 15-page biographical dictionary, an index of personages and a subject index. While the information may be found in other sources, the fact that it is collected in these two volumes makes them a good starting point for students looking for further research ideas, as well as a source to check the accuracy of information found on Web sites.”
