Great Lives from History: The Renaissance & Early Modern Era Review

“Readers will find the work attractive and the material is presented in a popular reading format.”
-ARBA, 2006

“The Renaissance is revered for its artists and their sponsors, especially the de Medici family. While much of the focus on this era is centered in what is now Italy, particularly Florence, the coverage here is worldwide. From the popes and monks who participated in politics almost as much as their spiritual institutions, other persons are also included who have received little or no recognition, such as Deganawida, founder of the Iroquois Nation. Signed essays range from 1,500 to 3,000 words and each has the name of the individual, title and dates the title was held, and a brief statement of the accomplishments. Birth and death dates are given, along with alternative names and the areas of achievement. Entries provide the early life, the life’s works and significance. Further reading bibliographies are annotated, “see also” references are given and related articles are listed. Black-and-white drawings and reproductions of paintings illustrate the text. Appendices include a listing of rulers and dynasties listed by category, popes, and then by countries. A chronological list of entries helps place persons from around the globe into context. A six-page category index and a four-page geographical index further assist students and teachers.”
