Critical Survey of Shakespeare's Plays Review

“First published as Shakespeare (1998), the current volume consists largely of reprints from prior Salem Press/Magill’s reference works. Roughly half the book is taken up by brief overviews of the plays and long poems. (Edward III, recently attributed at least in part to Shakespeare, is included; the sonnets are the subject of the separate volume.) Each summary is followed by an equally brief critical analysis and an annotated list of recommended readings. The critical discussions for each work vary in their level of insight. Of particular interest are the longer essays, which examine Shakespeare’s biography, the history of Shakespeare studies, playing Shakespeare at the Globe, women’s speech, and family relations (the last three are new to this edition). Indexes, character and quotation lists, and an extensive bibliography round out the volume. As one‐volume introductions to Shakespeare go, this is a serviceable offering and suitable for students approaching Shakespeare for the first time. Summing Up: Recommended.”
