This collection of critical essays is divided into three main parts—a history of the book and its author, and the Paris Review perspective, the novel in its historical and literary context and close readings of the novel through several lenses. The text includes a section discussing the novel on film, and another comparing and contrasting the work to other war novels. Also of note are several essays discussing the novel in the context of Weimar culture, the flourishing of arts in Germany between the two world wars. A chronology of Remarque’s life and works and a bibliography are included.
