Critical Survey of Short Fiction Edited by Charles E. May Profiles of major short story writers throughout history and the world–organized so libraries can select only the topics they want. This edition added 145 new writers. A significant effort was made to add more women; they include such notable figures as Michelle Cliff, Edwidge Danticat, Anita Desai, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Carol Shields, and Christa Wolf. Many important authors from around the world are featured for the first time in this edition; those with works in English translation include Daniel Alarcon, J. M. G. Le Clézio, Haruki Murakami, and Mario Vargas Llosa. Entries begin with full data on dates and places of birth and death and a list of “Principal Short Fiction.” Next is a brief overview of “Other Literary Forms” and two longer sections, “Achievements” and “Biography.” The longest section, “Analysis,” discusses style and themes, with subsections on one or more works of short fiction. The final section includes a list of other major works and a complete bibliography. The subsets are arranged alphabetically, and each writer appears in only one subset. Critical Survey of Short Fiction is organized into five subsets by geography and essay type: A four-volume subset on American Writers; a two-volume subset on British, Irish, and Commonwealth Writers; a one-volume subset on European Writers; a one-volume subset on World Writers; and a one- volume subset of Topical Essays. A Cumulative Indexes volume covering all five subsets is free with purchase of more than one subset. The result is flexibility for libraries, allowing them to select the material most needed for their literary reference collections, and build the larger set over time. BEST SELLER!
