Arranged alphabetically by author, the essays are detailed and readable enough for the average mystery lover, who may be looking to learn more about beloved characters or favorite authors. Yet they are also scholarly enough for the academic interested in subtleties of plot and character development. For those doing detailed research, this is an excellent starting point that also directs the researcher to other resources....While none of these essays is the final or most complete word on any of these authors, the book as a whole is the only reference a library would need to answer basic questions or quell readers' curiosity about top mystery writers.
Library Journal

Highly recommended for all libraries, this well-written update of Critical Survey of Mystery and Detective Fiction, ed. by Frank N. Magill (CH, Sep'98), will satisfy any library that needs recent reference information on mystery writers, their works, and principal characters. The essays are enjoyable and informative, the format straightforward, and the bibliographies for authors such as Wilkie Collins include modern sources likely to be available to readers using smaller collections.
Choice

The set is recommended for large reference collections seeking comprehensive coverage of the genre and especially for smaller collections looking for something relatively inexpensive, but well done,
to fill a gap.
