Critical Insights: Gender, Sex, & Sexuality explores gender, sex, and sexuality in literature. This title asks questions like: What does it mean to be a “proper” man or woman? What if one cannot be properly called either? Should one wield one’s sexual power politically? What is the relation between law, divine or secular, and sexuality? Each article, written by a professional writer, is around 15-30 pages in length, and all essays conclude with a list of "Works Cited," along with endnotes. The three main sections of this title are Critical Contexts, Critical Readings, and Resources.
Critical Context delves into the author's opinion on gender. We take a look into gender, sex, and sexuality in a variety of different ways such as examining the different types of sexes, genders, and sexuality from ancient myths to present say; queerness; and religion, masculinity, and self-determination. Critical Readings puts the spotlight on famous works such as Aristophanes' Lysistrata, Genji Monogatari, Macbeth, Paradise Lost, Victorian fiction, Tomboy Trouble, and more from a plethora of distinct cultures and viewpoints.
An important feature of each essay is a close reading of the primary source that develops evidence of broader themes, such as author’s purpose, social or class position, point and other relevant issues. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction that explains the questions and problems underlying the subjects and context in the historical documents. A brief glossary, included at the end of each document, highlights keywords important in the study of the primary source. Each essay also includes a Bibliography and Additional Reading section for further research.
