ISBN 978-1-58765-473-2. $1020; Online: Salem History REF This set is built on the work of several earlier Salem publications, including the 20-volume The Twentieth Century: Great Athletes (1992) and its three-volume supplement (1994) and the eight-volume Great Athletes, Revised (2001), which added 211 entirely new articles. This new incarnation retains articles on all the athletes covered in the earlier editions while adding 380 new articles and updating the old ones. All this brings the new total of biographies included to 1500, covering every sport imaginable. The set is subdivided into topical groups: Football (two volumes), Baseball (two volumes), Olympic Sports (four volumes), Basketball (one volume), Golf & Tennis (one volume), Boxing & Soccer (one volume), and Racing & Individual Sports (one volume). This organization makes it easy for a library to purchase the entire set or only the desired volumes (an index is free with any purchase). In addition, information is up-to-date through the 2008 Olympics, and every athlete covered is pictured, usually with a photograph of the athlete in action. More than 50 nations and more than 60 different sports are represented. BOTTOM LINE This is the largest and most comprehensive collection of sports biographies published in a single reference set-organized so that libraries can select only what they want. A great buy for high school, college, and university libraries, with attention given to those parts of the set that are more appropriate to the individual library and its budget.
