Edited by Berman (Univ. of Rochester), this set is a companion to other titles in "The Decades in America" series, including The Fifties in America (2005), ed. by J.C. Super; The Sixties in America (1999), ed. by C. Singleton (CH, Oct'99, 37-0647); The Seventies in America (2006), ed. by J.C. Super (CH, May'06, 43-5039); and The Eighties in America (2008) ed. by M. Berman (CH, Nov'08, 46-1261). The three volumes in the new title feature 630 entries, with both long overview and short entries arranged in alphabetical order. The wide variety of topics addressed makes this set a useful resource for anyone researching the decade. In addition to the entries the work has a table of contents in each volume, over 300 photographs, 50 sidebars, and lists, tables, graphs, and speech excerpts that emphasize the facts and trends of the decade. Appendixes encompass stage, film, television, literature, a glossary, time line, a list of resources, and four different indexes to allow readers to locate information easily. Entries in this valuable set are well written, and include section headings, further reading recommendations, and cross-references. Web access is included for series titles that a library owns.

Summing Up: Recommended. High School students, lower-level undergraduates, and general readers.
