Musicians & Composers of the 20th Century is an extremely ambitious biographical work that includes essays on more than 600 musicians, composers, conductors, and other individuals involved in the world of music. The people included represent music from all genres, including classical, country, gospel, jazz, musical theater, opera, and rap. Each entry includes the name of the individual, a brief overview of his or her career, principal works, a brief biography, and several additional sections, including a brief, annotated bibliography. Entries range from 1,500 to 2,500 words each. Also, with the purchase of the set it is possible to access the full content online for free. In addition to the alphabetic biographical entry list several valuable additional materials are provided, including a general bibliography (arranged by genre), a glossary, a chronological list of musicians, electronic resources, a category index, a geographical index, a personages and groups index, and a works index covering all individual musical works cited. More than 200 scholars and academicians, which are listed in the introduction (p. xiii) contributed to the writing of the work. This is an impressive work. It is highly recommended for all larger academic and public library collections, and for specialized music collections.
