Reference is changed. Students and patrons insist it be entirely more useful and accessible. Or disappear. The limits that once were taken for granted are no longer acceptable. So Salem Press is changing the nature of the reference we provide, giving new meaning to the idea of "unlimited" resources.

Salem Health It's Your Content
In a nutshell, the content schools and libraries purchase from Salem can be delivered as your library sees fit. In print. Online. To an unlimited number of users, anywhere they need those resources. And without restrictions on how long your content is yours.

Salem provides access to its award-winning content both in traditional, printed form and online. Both uses are included in the purchase of Salem reference. Qualifying past purchases as well as new ones.

Any school or library with reference content included in Salem's health, history, literature and science databases is entitled to online access to that content. This access is an inherent part of our product. Period.

Past purchases qualify. Schools and libraries aren't required to buy any new titles. Customer's content, the reference on shelves right now, is available throughout a system and remotely. Access is unlimited. Immediately. Just call.

The advantages are clear:

Online access is an inherent part of most Salem reference.
Current holdings are available online, at no charge.
Until it is revised, content never expires or needs to be renewed.
It's your content. Use it as you see fit.

New Editions
While a substantial number of our current and past reference is available online now, Salem will be updating some of these works in the future. When a title is updated, customers must purchase the new edition to have access to it online. Past editions - once replaced by revised editions - will not be available in Salem databases.

Why
Electronic media brings opportunity, trade-offs and turmoil to reference. CDs, ebook files and online databases offer content delivery options galore. At the same time, the costs of maintaining both traditional print reference and electronic resources have escalated significantly, to the point where most colleges, schools and libraries are forced to choose one format from among the many offered by publishers.

Most institutions select either ebook, online databases, or printed versions of the reference they need. Choosing both print and electronic editions of a single reference title is normally prohibitively expensive, in spite of the clear benefits of offering both to students and patrons.

Salem's Initiative
Salem Press has a solution. Salem Health, Salem History, Salem Literature and Salem Science are all robust online databases that include the complete content of the printed versions of most Salem reference titles. Purchasing the printed reference delivers online access at no additional cost.

The online databases include a number of up-to-the-minute features:

complimentary with print purchase
Fully supported
Unlimited users at your library
Full access from home or dorm room
Immediate access via online registration
A simple, intuitive interface
User profile areas for students and patrons
Sophisticated search functions
Complete content, including appendixes
Fully illustrated

Current Users
Thousands of schools, colleges and libraries currently use Salem's online platforms to bring their patrons and students reference content online, in libraries and at home. Many others, who have qualifying Salem reference in their collections now, can activate and use that content online, at no cost. And, of course, new titles will be added to all our databases simultaneously with the publication of the print version.

Beginning in 2012
Beginning in January, 2012, Salem will charge $100 per year to maintain access to each of our databases. Note this fee is for all of the titles you own in an entire database. For instance, all of your library's titles in Salem History, no matter how many you own, will be hosted for a $100 per year charge. Content will be available there indefinitely (or until a revised version is published) and there will be no other charge. This hosting fee will not be required until January, 2012.

The Resources
For specific information about the reference titles included in Salem's complimentary databases, please click the appropriate link below:

Salem Health - An extended series of healthcare information for patients, families, caregivers, biology and medical students.

Salem History - Salem's diverse library of biography, history and primary source document reference.

Salem Science - Our science database will arrive in December, 2009.

Getting Started
To initiate access to your Salem reference online takes minutes. All new titles that are included in our online databases have an "Activation Number" bound into the inside back cover of Volume 1 of the printed set. This number is used to activate your online account. The number is unique to each printed set and can only be used by one school, college or library. For complete instructions, click here.

Those with prior purchases of Salem reference activate their access to that content with a phone call. Just dial (800) 221-1592. We'll take it from there.

Adding New Titles
Once you have activated your Salem database, new titles are made available simply by adding the "Activation Number" of the new purchase to your list of available content. (As always, for help call us.) For more information, please click here.

Qualifying Institutions
Activation of any Salem Press database entitles an institution (library system or school) to unlimited use of that title throughout the institution. The size of your student body, the number of branch libraries in your system, none of these issues comes into play. If your school or library owns the printed set, it has unlimited access to the content online.

Consortia
Salem databases are not offered to consortia, statewide programs or other multiple-institution purchasing groups. For details, please call us at: (800) 221-1592.
