The free, online database from Salem that accompanies The Decades series, the Great Lives from History series and the new, five-part series Milestone Documents.

Salem History Electronic media brings opportunity, trade-offs and turmoil to reference. CDs, ebook files and online databases offer content delivery options galore. At the same time, the costs of maintaining both traditional print reference and electronic resources have escalated significantly, to the point where most colleges, schools and libraries are forced to choose one format from among the many offered by publishers.

Most institutions select either ebook, online database or printed versions of the reference they need. Choosing both print and electronic editions of a single reference title is normally prohibitively expensive, in spite of the clear benefits of offering both to students and patrons.

SALEM'S INITIATIVE
Salem Press has a solution. Salem History is a robust online database that includes the complete content of printed reference sets, free. Purchasing printed reference delivers online access at no additional cost. Salem currently offers this service with three historical reference sets:

Milestone Documents - A new, primary source series
The Decades - Salem's critically acclaimed American history series
Great Lives from History - Definitive, worldwide biographical resource

Purchasing the newest title in any of these series provides unlimited, free online access to the content in that title through 12/31/2011. The online database includes a number of up-to-the-minute features:

Free with print purchase
Fully supported
Free access through 12/31/2011
Unlimited users at your library
Full access from home or dorm room
Immediate access via online registration
A simple, intuitive interface
User profile areas for students and patrons
Sophisticated search functions
Complete content, including appendixes

RETROACTIVE BENEFITS
Many Salem customers already own reference sets from the Decades series and from Great Lives from History. Good news: those colleges, schools and public libraries that already own some or all of the previously published titles in each series automatically qualify to access the earlier works' content free, once the newest title is purchased. Plus, Salem is offering special, "collection development" discounts to those who wish to complete their collection of titles in any or all these series.

The Decades Series
Salem Press published the critically acclaimed The Sixties in America in 1999. The Fifties in America and The Seventies in America, both very favorably reviewed, followed. In May, 2008 The Eighties in America will be available, along with free access to all its content via Salem History, the new online history database from Salem Press.

Salem History
Purchasing The Eighties in America entitles a college, school or library to free, unlimited, online access to this set's entire content through 12/31/2011. Activation is easy, access is unlimited (including off-site access) and free through 12/31/2011.

Complete Collections
Schools and libraries with incomplete collections of the Decades series may buy all missing titles at the special "Collection Development" discount of 25% off the list price. Completed collections enjoy all four Decades sets' complete content, online as well as on shelves. Of course, all future Decades sets will be included.

Milestone Documents
Milestone Documents in American History is the first of five primary source resources from the Schlager Group and Salem Press. It combines 133 full-text primary source documents with expert analysis and commentary. Five sets in the series, covering five major areas, are scheduled for publication:
